President of EATSTS
Dr. Jaehak Oh
Korea Transport Institute, Korea
Dear Honorable Members and Participants,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 14th International Conference of EASTS to be held in Hiroshima, Japan, on September 12-15, 2021. I am very pleased to give a welcome message to the EASTS members and participants of the conference.
Founded with the objective of fostering professional exchange in transport research and practice in 1994, the EASTS has achieved remarkable growth in terms of quantity and quality of academic activities. The Society currently consists of 19 Domestic Societies and around 1,500 members. It has established itself as the most influential international transportation academic society in Asia and Oceania.
This year, the conference will be held at Hiroshima University in Hiroshima city. The conference will be organized in a mixed format of online and offline sessions because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The conference sessions will include topics of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transport sector. The public transport industry and the aviation industry have been hard-hit by the pandemic, and ridership and revenue have greatly decreased. Along with the advancement of the fourth industrial revolution, digital and green transformation issues will also be presented and discussed at the conference. I expect that the conference will provide great opportunities for participants with various transport policy and technological insights.
The local organizing committee is making the best efforts in preparing measures against COVID-19 infection to ensure safety and health for conference participants. Also, as you are well aware, the International Scientific Committee is making sure of good scientific works and preparing for an excellent conference program.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to ISC and LOC members for their hard works to prepare for the 14th EASTS Conference.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the Conference in coming September.
Dr. Jaehak Oh,
President of EASTS
President of Korea Transport Institute
Chairperson of International Scientific Committee (ISC)
Prof. Yu-Chiun Chiou
National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan
Dear Honorable Members and Conference Participants of EASTS,
I am very honored and pleased to be appointed as the ISC chairperson with a mission to foster exchanges in academic research and practical applications among our 19 EASTS local societies. The 19 local societies of EASTS have similar transportation situations and face similar traffic problems. The umbrella of EASTS provides a perfect platform for experience exchanges and international cooperation to explore solutions for providing safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.
For past EASTS conferences, ISC received a total of 450~530 submissions for each conference, encompassing a variety of research topics coauthored by researchers from both academia and practice. The number of registered delegates has ranged from 600 to over 1000, making conference participation stimulating and fruitful.
To successfully host such a big conference during a rather limited time period is very challenging. I would like to thank the Local Organizing Committee, headed by Prof. Akimasa Fujiwara and his outstanding colleagues at Hiroshima University, for the strong support for ISC activities under such difficult times as the COVID-19 pandemic. I understand the local steering committee has prepared and work-shopped several contingency plans to cope with the rapidly evolving challenges of COVID-19.
Hiroshima Prefecture is situated in Western Japan on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in an environment richly endowed with natural resources and scenic beauty. Hiroshima City itself has long been known as a beautiful and memorable place to visit. I look forward eagerly to seeing you in person or online at the EASTS2021 conference.

EASTS Japan is pleased to hold the 14th EASTS Conference on September 12 to 15, 2021, in Hiroshima, entitled “Quality Transport towards Peace and Sustainability in Asia: Beyond the New Normal” with our hospitality. Please welcome to the peace memorial city of Hiroshima.
During the conference, we will provide a mobile phone application of Conference MaaS. Once you input a session that you will join, the application can provide the shortest route, best-mixed modes, and optimal departure time from your accommodation to the conference venue. Please enjoy the Conference MaaS.
EASTS Japan established a conference organization committee which consists of Hiroshima University, local government, and the members of Hiroshima consortium of more than 20 organizations from public and private sectors.
There are two world heritages, six beautiful rivers, many tasty local foods, and historical culture in the city. Also, various tram vehicles came from other cities (e.g., Kyoto, Kobe, Hanover, and Dortmund), and modern light rail transits can be seen in the city. Please enjoy the free-of-charge transport museum.
EASTS 2021 Conference will be held at the Hiroshima University campus in the city center, located about 1.5 km south of the Peace Memorial Park. The space and quality of the facility are enough to communicate mutually and create new ideas among participants. In addition, virtual remote meetings will be available via the Internet to avoid the risks of COVID-19.
Because Hiroshima is a world-famous tourist city, many quality hotels are located near the conference venue. The consortium will play a role to assure sponsorship to realize the “Smart, Simple and Sustainable Conference”.
As a post-conference, we have a plan to organize technical tours on transport and urban planning. Some options are available: (i) Hiroshima Station Redevelopment Project, (ii) Connected Autonomous Bus with LRT Project, and (iii) SHIMANAMI KAIDO Cycling Tourism, and so on.
We would like to extend to all of you our warmest welcome.
See you in Hiroshima.
